About Ashtanga

Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic, physically demanding practice that synchronises breath and movement to produce an internal heat designed to purify the body. It's a structured sequence of poses, each held for a certain number of breaths and linked by flowing movements called vinyasas. Our classes in Leicester typically start with sun salutations to warm up the body, followed by a series of standing poses, seated postures, and finally, a set of finishing sequences that include some inversion and meditative postures.

Ashtanga is unique because of its specific sequence that practitioners follow, known as the Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa), which aims to detoxify muscles and organs. The subsequent series further intensify the challenge, each level upping the ante on strength, flexibility, and focus.

The practice is not just about physical strength or flexibility; it also promotes mental discipline and spiritual development. Regular practice is said to improve concentration, determination, and inner peace. Ashtanga's rigorous routine and the meditative quality of its movements offer a holistic approach to well-being, making it a deeply rewarding, if challenging, form of yoga. Emily Hartley

Emily has been teaching yoga and meditation for over seven years and has travelled regularly to Rishikesh, India to train and deepen her practice.

 

Complimenting her asana practice and teaching, she has explored mindfulness-based meditation practices, Tantra and Bhakti which she integrates into her teaching and life.

 

Emily's yoga classes are focused on mindful movement, with detailed attention to postural alignment and breath. By allowing your body to arrive at the posture that is right for you, the resulting practice is safe, comfortable and appropriately challenging. She aims for students to step off the mat feeling refreshed, energised and grounded.
